POPULAR DANCE

HIKUTAIA FUNCTION PATRIOTIC EFFORT COMBINED COMMITTEES’ WORK The Hikutaia Hall was crowded to its capacity on Monday- evening last when the combined Hikutaia Patriotic Committees held a most successful dance and euchre tournament to raise funds for the All-Purposes Appeal. The dance was held under the control of the Hikutaia Social Committee and proved a huge success both socially and financially. The hall was decorated with flags and bunting and this provided a bright background for the many beautiful evening gowns worn by the ladies. The function continued to the small hours of the morning, the dancers never seeming weary of dancing to the delightful music, which was provided by the Auckland orchestra, “Neddo and His Swing Kings” and the following numbers were enthusiastically received by the

throngs of dancers. A last war favourite, “Me and My Gal,” new hits, “ The Casings Go Rolling Along,” “White 'Christmas,” and “Why Don’t We Do This More Often.” Hawaiian novelty numbers were: “Maui Chimes,” and “Maui Girl.” Extras were provided by Mr and Mrs 'Walker and Mr Jennings. Mr G. Flavell acted as M.C.

The spot waltz was won by Mr O’Brien and Mr Chalk. The Monte Carlo waltz by Mr B. Clotworthy and partner and the 'Scotch Monte Carlo by Mr and Mrs A. Morrison. The lucky door prize went to Mr A. Smith while euchre prizes were won by Mesdames J. Miller and G. Geary and Messrs A. W. Alley and W. Wyatt. After a delicious supper had been served Mr G. Avery, chairman of the Combined Patriotic Committees thanked everyone for their attendance and also the social committee for the capable manner in which they conducted the dance. Mr Flavell also thanked Mr and Mrs Walker and Mr , Jennings .for their assistance in supplying the extras for the evening. Among those present were:— Mesdames G. Avery, A. W. Alley, R. Clark, A.
