FORTY YEARS AGO
PAEROA PUPIL TEACHERS SOCIAL HELD IN THEATRE ST. PAUL’S CHOIR FUND AIDED (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of August 18, 1903.) At the examination of candidates for employment as pupil teachers recently held, three candidates from the Paeroa District High School, namely, Miss Florence Mahony and Masters H. Snell and A. Sullivan, out of the four presented were successful in passing. The three pupil teachers on the school staff met with success, Miss Fawcett and Miss Taylor being now classed as secondyear pupil teachers and Mr E. A. Reynolds promoted to the thirdyear grade. We are pleased .also to record the success of Miss S. B. Forrest, formerly of the Paeroa School, but now stationed at Karanagahake. The social held in the Criterion Theatre last night, in aid of St. Paul’s Choir Fund, was thoroughly successful. The floor—that all important item—was in splendid condition, and there was no dust at all therefrom. The supper was well appreciated, and the music by Mettam’s Band was all that could be desired. The euchre prizes were won by Mrs Poland (a framed photograph of the Queen) and Mr A. Hubbard (a handsome pocket book). Mr F. Griffiths and Mr G. P. de Castro were M’s.C., while Miss E. Hubbard had charge of' the euchre tournament. The prizes were presented by Mr W. Moore, who, also, on behalf of the committee, thanked all those who had assisted in making the social so successful. Extras were played by Misses Wilson, de Castro and L. Silcock, and Mr Gilfillan.
