COROMANDEL INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING HELD INTERESTING ENGLISH LETTER The monthly meeting of the Coromandel Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday, August 4. Mrs King presided in the absence of the president who was attending the Dominion Conference at Gisborne. Owing to the very wet night there was a smaller attendance than usual, but. a very enjoyable time wasspent. A minute’s silence was observed in sympathy with an institute member’s loss of her mother, Mrs Boswell. The Federation president’s monthly letter was read.. It was decided to enter the competition for the Sugden Shield at the Auckland November Council meeting. A most interesting letter was read from the English Institute Link at Bishop Auckland near Durham. The letter had been handed to Mr W. J. Jordan while on a visit there. He had undertaken to have it delivered through the local member of 'Parliament in New Zealand. Mr Thorn, M.P. had duly received the letter and forwarded it to Coromandel through Mr King. Appreciation was expressed at Mr Jordan’s courteous action and also Mr Thorn’s immediate attention in forwarding the letter.

The roll call which was “How to put out a fire,” proved amusing and: was well responded to. The motto for the month was read by Miss Deeble and was “To be content with little is difficult, to be content with much, impossible.” One new member was welcomed to The competition results were as fob lows:— the institute. Scones.—Mrs McKinley 1, Miss Russell 2, Mrs Gilliver 3. Posy in sand.—Mrs Deeble 1, Mrs King 2, Mrs Battson 3. Darining.—Mrs King 1, Mrs James 2, Mrs F. Denize 3. Pickled onions.—Mrs Deeble 1, Mrs Battson 2. . Leeks.—Mrs King (only entry). Wall competition.—Mrs James.
