SCHOOL COMMITTEE

MEETING AT COROMANDEL INFANT MISTRESS APPOINTED The monthly meeting of the Coromandel School Committe was held recently, the chairman, Mr E. W. Gilliver, presiding over Messrs I. Scott, D. H. Knight, J. Gamble and C. Aker. It was announced by the chairman that Dr. and Mrs. Birkinshaw were tendering their resignations and he moved that the committee reluctantly | accept their resignations and record i appreciation of their services during their membership. The inward correspondence was largely routine, together with replies I to previous correspondence. Advice was received that Miss G= M. Box had been appointed as infant mistress, her duties to commence at the beginning of the second term. The committee was instructed to fill the vacancies caused by the resignations and to advise the board of the added personnel. Mr A. Bell, the Education Board member for the district sent a circular letter asking for support for his endeavour to have District High Schools placed on an equal footing with secondary schools in the matter of scale allowanees, equipment, staffing and holidays. The circular gave details to show a wide discrepancy in these matters; The committee decided to give wholeheatred support to this question, and at the same time to express appreciation to Mr Bell for bringing the matter forward. A letter of thanks is to he sent to the Coromandel branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union for its donation of one guinea for the cocoa fund.

The Dental Clinic Department forwarded a cheque for £2 6s 3d to cover incidental expenses during the quarter.

A circular soliciting support for the “Dig For Victory” campaign was received from the Auckland Education Board.

Accounts amounting to £l6 6s 5d were passed for payment.
