PAEROA BEATEN
WAIHI WIN THREE TO NIL MATCH PLAYED AT PAEROA GOOD RUGBY SEEN ON DOMAIN In one of the best rugby games seen on the Paeroa Domain this season, the Paeroa junior representative team on Saturday experienced its first defeat of the season going down to Waihi by three points to nil. The game was fast throughout and although in the closing stages of the match Paeroa definitely dominated play the visitors’ defence was exceedingly good, being just a little better than the home team’s penetration. The teams lined out as under:— Paeroa (green).—C. Speechlay, A. Crosby, W. Shilton, G. Fulton, R. Baker, K. Ryall, F. Chaney, J. Murphy, R. Pearson, G. Smith, W. Strong, R. Neil, N. Vinnicombe, N. Hansen, W. Niven. Waihi (black and yellow).—Grinlinton, B. Scoble, D. Shaw, Armitt, W. Dunston, W. Watene, D. Giddens, J. Hollis, Grant, R. Ashby, Blackmore, G. Porter, Thompson, Fry, Robinson. Waihi Open Attack Waihi kicked off and endeavoured to bustle right to the Paeroa line but a free kick allowed-Paeroa to clear. Waihi jeontinued to attack but Speechlay picked up off the feet of the attacking forwards and with a nice line kick put the ball out near midfield. A free kick near mid-field allowed Waihi to put the ball out near the Paeroa goal-line. In the ensuing play Waihi got away but Paeroa defence held. Speechlay failed to collect a ball during a Waihi attack and Fulton had to rally round to kick out near the Paeroa goal-line. From a line-out Waihi got away, sold Shilton the dummy and looked very dangerous, but Ryall stopped the movement and in a tight corner found the line with a nice kick.
Ryall put Paeroa on attack when he broke away, the movement penetrating to within 10’ yards of the Waihi goal-line. Movement Spoilt
Paeroa were awarded a free kick near the Waihi twenty-five well out but Ryall’s kick went wide and Waihi forced.
From a scrum Chaney secured and sent the ball out to Baker who beat a man in pretty style and then spoilt the movement by hanging on too long, being caught in possession.
Paeroa got away, each of the backs handling but the Waihi defence held and Fulton was forced to - kick, the ball going out near the Waihi corner flag. Armitt took a short kick from Speechlay and kicked clear ovei’ the line with an open field but Ryall came across and in a close race for the ball just managed to force. Waihi combined .to hammer on the Paeroa line and Speechlay attempted to kick over the Waihi men right on the goal line, the ball striking a Waihi player and bouncing across the Paeroa line. In the following scramble for the ball the referee awarded a force down to Paeroa. Speculator Kick Speechlay let Waihi through when he speculated in front of a Waihi forward rush, the ball going out of play only a yard or so from the Paeroa goal-line. Ryall was playing a great defensive game and stopped attack after attack launched by Waihi, finding the line with good kicks from awkward positions. Hollis was injured and had to retire and was replaced by Berryman. Paeroa took a turn at attack, the forwards getting well into the game. From a scramble Ryall secured and cut right through to the line, passing out to Baker who was tackled before he could collect. From the scrum under the posts Waihi defence held until eventually the black and yellows were able to force. (Half-time was called after a period of play mid-field without score. Paeroa Call The Tune After the interval Paeroa took a turn at attack. During play midfield Waihi sent the ball well Jiackand Speechlay and Crosby both ran away from it for Shaw to come up fast, collect and score near the posts. Giddens did no good l with the Jfisk. Waihi 3, Paeroa 0. From play mid-field Paeroa were granted a free kick, followed up fast and bustled to the Waihi line but the bteek and yellows forced. Paeroa again attacked- and Waihk was trying to run clear but Chaney came across with a good hard flyiag tackle and grassed the Waihi man (when bhe thought he -was ctear, the ball going out near the Waihi twentyfive.
Shftton broke through a Waihi at-
tack, the ball at toe, collected in a scramble with two Waihi backs but tripped . and fell near the Waihi twenty-five. Waihi were penalised in the ensuing' scrum but Ryall missed the kick and Waihi forced. Paeroa Right On Waihi Line Paeroa'continued to press, play being all in Waihi territory at this stage. Ryall launched an attack and Paeroa bustled play right to the Waihi goal posts where a knock-on stopped the attack. Paeroa continued to keep play on Waihi’s line and dived time and again to cross but excellent defence held Paeroa back. \ Back came Paeroa right to the line from an opening made by Shilton but in a scramble over the line under the posts Waihi forced. Back came Paeroa to the attack, hammering away not five yards from the Waihi goal-line but excellent defence. held. From a scrum the ball came out to Baker who had two men outside him but tried to do it all by himself and threw a sure try away and in ensuing play Waihi kicked to the line near the twenty-five. Paeroa continued to force the pace and play was all in the Waihi territory but Paeroa’s attack was not good enought to finish off the movements. Forced Out At Corner Ryall got away, handed en to Shilton who handed on to Crosby who vrae forced out on the corner flag. Paeroa were awarded a free kick i» a handy position but Speechlay did no good with it. Paeroa were awarded a free kick near mid-field in the centre and Ryall attempted a kick at goal but it fell short. - • Time was called with Paeroa still attacking. . . Waihi 3, Paeroa & « Mr A.
