“UGLY MAN” CONTEST
INTEREST IN COROMANDEL FINAL COUNT ON FRIDAY The Coromandel Patriotic Committee/has every reason to feel extremely satisfied with its recent drive .for funds. The “Ugly Man” competition has produced a number of applicants for that somewhat doubtful honour and it is now realised that but for mere manly modesty the title would have been the “Handsome Man” coinpetition, ■ >' The leader to date is Harty Denize with over 10,000 votes but “Tiger” J. McNeil is a very close second. Other competitors who will be closely contesting the final figures will be P. Murphy, J. Quist and A. R. King, There are rumours however, that many of the other competitors are holding back some of their votes in order to create a surprise on the final night. Among the dark horses may be mentioned D. H. Knight, Eric Gamble and Pat Lillis. It is emphasised that the scoring board displayed in the town , does not necessarily represent the total number of votes but only those votes
which have been definitely vouched for by the competitors themselves. As has been mentioned some of the competitors are legitimately holding back their full figures. In the circumstances it would seem that" Friday midnight when the winner will 1 ' receive the acclamation of ''Coromandel and the title of “Ugly Man” will be a most eagerly-awaited moment.
