STATE HOUSES
HOMES FOR SERVICEMEN
URGED BY MR SUTHERLAND QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT That the percentage of preference in the allocation of State houses to returned soldiers, their wives and dependents should be increased still further was urged by Mr A. S. Sutherland, M.P. for Hauraki when speaking in the House of Representatives last Thursday. Mr Sutherland said that he had asked a question of the Minister in Charge of State Advances relative to the supply of Government houses to returned soldiers, their wives and dependents and he was pleased to note that since then the 25 per cent, preference in the allocation of State houses had been increased to 50 per cent. He would urge that that percentage be increased still further.
The Rt. Hon. Mr Fraser: It will be increased if necessary. Mr Sutherland said that he had found the State Advances Corporation very fair in the allocation of the few houses becoming available. Measures should be taken to expedite the completion of houses under construction. It was satisfactory to note that the people might look forward to a resumption shortly of a full' housing programme.
He hoped that servicemen and exservicemen and their wives would at all times be treated generously. Many returned ex-servicemen were having great difficulty in finding homes to settle in on their discharge from the Army.
