WORK OF SERVICEMEN

SPECIAL DINNER AT BAY GESTURE OF APRECIATION A special dinner sponsored by the residents of Whitianga, Mercury Bay, was held on Tuesday evening as a gesture of appreciation to the men of the Services who had assisted the people of the district in. making “Tunisian Victory Day” so successful. Under the capable hostess, Mrs Troughear, fifteen servicemen, the president of the R.S.A., Mr F. Brophy, and the chairman of the patriotic committee, Mr Pooley, sat down to the grand repast. Mr Brophy, in his capacity as president of the R.S.A., mentioned in his speech to the men, what a great deal they had contributed to the outstanding celebration of “Tunisian Victory Day,” and that the success of the campaign had been in no small measure due to their whole-hearted effort and enthusiasm. Mr Brophy also stressed

the good conduct of the men generally. Mr Pooley on behalf of the Patriotic Committee and the people of the district extended appreciation to the men of the services. Mrs Troughear responded suitably to the speech made in her honour. Mr Happy, replying on behalf of the men of the Services said that the effort made by the men in the campaign was due to the fact that they wished to show the people of the' Bay how much they had appreciated the residents. After the dinner, the men made their way to the public hall where a continuation of the district’s gesture of appreciation was carried through in the form of a dance. DANCE FOLLOWS AN ENJOYABLE EVENING The atmosphere of the public hall on Tuesday evening was typically friendly and happy as people gathered together as a mark of appreciation to the men of the services who had worked so effortlessly in the “Tunisian Victory Day” celebration. The M.C. Mr Happy, rendered, services brightly and Mrs Rose gave her usual standard on the piano accordion. At intervals throughout the evening Mr J. H. Keith of Paeroa supplied music through his loud speakers, and at another stage of the evening screened a film trailer, which supplied several minutes of humorous l entertainment. Statue waltz winners were Miss D.
