WEIGHT LIMITS
CONTENTS OF PARCELS GIFTS TO BRITAIN & U.S.A. FORCES’ PARCELS UNAFFECTED \ As a. result of a request made to Mr J.’ Thorn, M.P., for information as to regulations covering the sending of parcels to (Britain and the United •States, the Postmaster-General has replied to Mr Thorn as follows:— “In reference to your enquiry about the restriction on the contents of parcels addressed to the United Kingdom, the position is that the British authorities about two years ago imposed a weight limit of 21b. on any 6ne foodstuff contained in a gift parcel to a civilian in the United Kingdom. They also imposed a weight limit of 51b. on any such parcel as a whole. Any foodstuff suitable for posting may, however, be enclosed in a gift parcel for the United Kingdom except tea, unless a permit has been issued by the New Zealand Minister of Customs.
Dominion Forces Parcels “These restrictions as regards civilian parcels do not, of course, apply to parcels addressed to members of the Dominion Forces serving in the United Kingdom or to New Zealanders serving with British unitsj provided that in the latter case the parcels are addressed to the care of the New Zealand War Services Association, New Zealand House, 415 Strand, London, W.C.2. “Trade parcels addressed to the United Kingdom, i.e., those containing goods or products exported in the normal course of trade or business, are not affected by the restriction mentioned in the preceding paragraph except as regards tea. Such parcels are accepted up to 221 b. in weight but they must in all cases be accompanied by a Customs export licence.
United States Arrangements “As regards parcels to the United ■ States of America, pr generally to any .other countiy with which mails are still exchanged, ’ the usual pre-war arrangements apply, i.e., ‘ the requirements bf the Customs authorities in the countries of origin and destination must be observed. The prohibitions and Observations in respect to the parcel-post service to the United States of America are published, in detail’ oh pace 121 of the Post Office Guide, which may be perused on application at any /post office.”
