PATRIOTIC DANCE
EVENING IN COROMANDEL £l2. RAISED |BY FUNCTION A most enjoyable dance in aid of patriotic funds was held in St. George’s Hall, Coromandel, on Friday, July 2. While the attendance was somewhat smaller than is usual at these dances, everyone spent a happy evening. Owing to a broken belt on the electric light engine the hall was in darkness for about half-an-hour before supper . Advantage was taken of the mishap and a twilight waltz and black-out foxtrot proved very popular, one torch and one match power being the sole illumination. Voluntary music was supplied by Mrs E. Lucas and Lee Perfest, while extras were played by Miss Lillis and Miss Janet McLellan. Mr Eric Gamble acted as M.C. and kept things moving throughout the evening. During the evening Miss Jean McLellan delighted the audience with a bracket' of songs “Johnny Doughboy” and “Beneath the Lights of Home.” These received such spontaneous applause and 'requests for an encore resulted in her ever-popular rendering of “The Rose of San Antone.” A very tasty buffet supper was served by the Patriotic Committee ladies and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the coffee. A novelty Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss J. Deeble and Sgt. Max Denize. An ordinary Monte Carlo was won by the Misses Jane and Martin. Mrs Lynne, chairwoman of the Patriotic Sub-Committee, intimated that approximately £l2 nett was the re-
suit of the evening’s effort. She extended thanks to the musicians who had given their services free arid also those who had prepared the supper, floor, etc. and asked for a hearty clap of appreciation which was complied with with no uncertain results. “Auld Lang Syne” followed, by “God Save the King,” brought the dance to a close at 1 a.m.
