DANCE AT COROGLEN

VERY SUCCESSFUL EVENING FUNDS FOR COROGLEN HALL On .Wednesday, June 30, the Coroglen Hall, despite the raging of the elements, was well filled with enthusiastic dancers, who had gathered together for-the purpose of doing their bit towards raising funds for the reconditioning of the hall. Under the shadowy lights of swinging lamps, people mingled and laughed, as they danced to the music supplied by Mrs Rose of Whitianga. The M.C., Mr K. Hamilton, did his duty efficiently, and dances were appreciatively and rapidly followed through, so that there was no waiting and time to get cold. During the evening several men of the Services were responsible for a humorous interval in connection with the “Ugly Man Competition” and much laughter was caused as “Happy,” the Services candidate in the widelyknown competition, with the assistance of his “manager” and “secretary” did some canvassing and appealing in connection with raising votes from all the “beautiful and smiling” people in tlhe hall. The response was spontaneous and “Happy’s” place on the “Ugly Man” ladder moved up, as agents went amongst the dancers collecting votes at threepence apiece.

Winners of the Monte Carlo waltzes included:—Miss I. Hamilton and Mr R. Hamilton; Miss S. Gordon and Mr G- Donovan. The final waltz was won by Mrs Heald and Mr Harris, the prize causing much laughter when it was announced that five votes towards “Happy’s” place on the Ugly Man ladder were to be given free to the lady dancer, and the’ gentleman, provided he paid for the five votes. The door takings were to assist the fund for improvements to principally the installation of electricity. Dancers from surrounding districts have been impressed with the atmosphere of the Coroglen dance# and although electricity will greatly improve the hall, dancing under the glow of swinging lamps was in itself unique and added a touch of individuality to the dance hall.
