WIN FOR LADIES

CRICKET AT WHENUAKITE MATCH IN IDEAL WEATHER RESULT OF TWO-INNINGS GAME Confidence in the clerk of the weather was fully justified when the Whenuakite ladies’ cricket team played a return match with Whenuakite at Whenuakite recently. The conditions for the game were ideal, bright sunshine prevailing .throughout an enjoyable day’s play which ended in a clear-cut victory for the ladies. The teams were:—

Whenuakite. — Lynch (captain), Harcourt, Boyle, A. Donovan, Skinner, Happy, Carry, Pitkethley, McLean, Southall, Jones. Ladies.—Misses Hare (captain), Bruce, I. Hamilton, Stocker, Z. Hamilton, Murray, A. Hamilton, Mrs Pitkethley, ‘‘Misses” Ken Marshall, Geoff. Donovan and Keith Brown completed the team in the absence of some of the ladies. Miss Hare won the toss and sent the men in for first strike. Six wickets fell quickly for 14 runs before Boyle (28) and McLean (21) made a stand. The innings closed with the total at 63. Miss Hare took five wickets.

The ladies’ first innings opened sensationally with two wickets falling without score. The ladies fought back and raised their total to 79, Miss Hamilton being the top scorer with a determined 17. ' Lynch and Carr shared the bowling honours. The men began their second innings cautiously and by careful play put 63 on the board for five wickets, Harcourt 17 and Lynch 23 being the principal scorers. Then the ladies came to light and skittled the remaining batsmen for only 13 runs, Miss Hare narrowly missing the hat trick. This left the ladies with 61 to get to win. When stumps were drawn they had scored 85 for eight wickets (Miss Hare 23, not out, Miss Hamilton, 11 and Miss Z. Hamilton 9). The ladies throughout the match showed the effect of their recent practising and were a much improved team. Their fielding especially was better than before and some fine catches were taken. The men’s lefthanded bowling was much better too and fewer wides were registered.
