FIRES IN DRAINS

FENCE BURNT BY CLEANER CLAIM MADE ON THE BOARD Due to the dryness of. the past season many drain cleaners on the Hauraki Plains used fires to remove the rough growth in and along the banks and a sequel to this was heard at yesterday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains West Drainage Board when a claim for 7s 6d from Mr J. Motion of Ngatea for a post burnt off by such a fire was approved deducted from the money due to the contractor. Mr Motion wrote as under. “I am sorry to have' to complain about one of your drainers, he lit fires in the drain near my house and set fire to a power pole and some of my posts. One post is burnt away and I had to carry water to put out the fire on a power pole and two posts. The batten covering the earth wire is all burnt away and the power pole is not safe now. This is not the first time I have lost posts. I wish to claim 7s 6d for loss of post and time putting out fires.” “Quite right too,” commented the chairman, Mr C. W. Parfitt. The secretary was instructed to' collect the amount claimed from the contractor.
