CONVENT COMPETITION SKATING RINK OPENED EXHIBITIONS AT KARANGAHAKE (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of June 23, 1903.) The pupils of St. Joseph’s Convent School competed last week for the first and second prizes presented by Mr A. Forbes for the best composition. Mr W. D. Nicholas kindly acted as judge, and awarded first prize to “Pansy,” Miss Olive Casey; and the second to “Bluebell,” Miss Maude Butler. The Rev. Dean Hackett desires to return thanks to Mr Forbes for his generous help and to Mr Nicholas for his award and criticism. On Friday night the Columbia Skating Rink opened up in Karangahake in Montgomery’s Hall. The Waihi Brass Band was. in attendance and played selections during the evening. The Skatorial King or the man on wheels gave several excellent exhibitions during the . evening which were highly appreciated and some of the feats were truly marvellous. There was a large number who took to skates and the* onlookers saw plenty to amuse them. The proprietors are talking of establishing a branch in Karangahake and from all appearances it ought to prove highly remunerative as it seems to have taken on exceedingly well. There were also inducments offered to visit Paeroa and there is a likelihood of such being done. It has taken on surprisingly at Waihi as the hall is packed every night.
