WHITIANGA EDUCATION GROUP LECTURE ON DEMOCRACY On Tuesday, June 15, the Whitianga Adult Education Group met in the home of Mrs L. V. Smith to further pursue the study of the subject “Democracy” under the Auckland Adult Education Discussion Group course. Of the sixteen members in the group, among those present at Tuesday’s meeting were Mr S. Tucker, leader, Mrs L. V. Smith, secretary, Mrs D. Close, Mrs Heald, Miss Lyon, Miss J. Smith, Mr and Mrs R. Smith, W, Debenham and A. N. Scoble.

After lecture three “Democratic Institutions” by Mr R. S. Parker, B.Sc., had been discussed and completed, Mr S. Tucker adjourned the meeting early and supper was served. This was a farewell gesture to one of the most prominent members of the group, Mrs D. Close, of Auckland, who was returning to her home after a lengthy stay in Whitianga. Mr Tucker, in his few words of farewell, said that Mrs Close was an intelligent, good tempered and helpful debater and although the group would be losing a valuable member, it. was hoped that by Mrs Close going away, it would mean that Mr W. H. Heald would be coming back to take her place. Mr Tucker, on behalf of the group wished Mrs Close every success- and all members joined in singing “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”

Mrs Close in her informal words of response said that she was very much touched with the gesture of appreciation and said how very fine it was of the group to accept an outsider as they had done, and permit her to express her opinions. Mrs Close mentioned that open discussion was a good thing, and spoke well for the future for it helped all to understand each other better.
