VALUE TO NATION

HEALTHY PRIVATE ENTERPRISE SPEECH BY MR SUTHRLAND M.P. The value to the nation of healthy private enterprise was emphasised by Mr A. S. Sutherland, M.P. for Hauraki, when speaking in the House of Representatives last week. Mr Sutherland said:— “Thrift I have always advocated in ■this House. Superannuitants, and those who have made other provisio

for their old age, should receive as much consideration from the Minister. of Finance as age beneficiaries. “I observed yesterday that the honourable member for Dunedin Central devoted a considerable part of his speech to quoting- various Soviet leaders, so I make no excuse for quoting Mr Churchill. One of our returned soldiers who has been de- | corated was reported recently as having declared that the soldiers out East had heard a great many speeches which were pure guff, so apparently our politicians did not make much of an impression out East. But that soldier considered that all Mr Churchill said was sound and to the point.

“Mr Churchill recently made some pointed statements about Britons not wanting to be governed by a bureaucracy. He declared that the State should interest itself in the economicA balance of the nation, but that it was vital that at the earliest opportunity, after the winning of the war, that widespread healthy private enterprise should again be encouraged. “He warned us against too much socialism where nobody counted for anything except politicians and government officials. He declared that private enterprise must be rewarded for its thrift and individuality if we lare to remain a free people.
