LARGE BLOCK OF NATIVE LAND MAORIS MAKE GOOD FARMERS “A great deal of native land courd be brought into productivity, and, after a few years of supervision, it Could become, the means of making the natives self-reliant,” contended Mr A. S. Sutherland, M.P. for Hauraki, when speaking in the House of Representatives last week. •Speaking on the question of native development schemes Mr Sutherland said: — “I should like to say a few words about native development. There is. great scope for native development in New Zealand. The natives own large tracts of land which are lying undeveloped. I hope that the Government and the Rehabilitation Board will give the Maoris some assistance. “The Maoris make good farmers. I had a lot to do with them in the north and with a little encouragement, financial assistance, and good supervision, they make really good farmers.”
