SALE OF PORK
COMPLETE PROHIBITION PORK BUTCHERS’ POSITION FEW EXCEPTIONS TO ORDER Representations have been made to the Food Controller through the Master Butchers’ Association of New Zealand with a view to assisting those who are exclusively pork butchers to obtain a ration of pork for sale so as to maintain their businesses. The reply of the Food Controller is to the effect that the amount that would ‘be involved to make such- a concession to the pork butchers throughout the Dominion would be too great to permit such an allowance and the request has been declined. It was thought that the sale of salted pork might be outside the scope of the prohibition order but that is not so. It is now an offence for any butcher to sell, or for a customer to buy, fresh, frozen, pickled or cooxed nork for the period ending on July 18, 1943. Butchers are not restricted as to the sale of meat from chopper” pigs or of the offals which in- '■ elude livers, kidneys, tongues, heads, trotters and bones required for the small goods trade. There are certain exceptions from the prohibition order which concern contracts to supply the Army, Navy and Air Force, coastal and overseas shipping, and hospitals, subject to the hospital authority providing a certificate to the effect that the poik supplied is for use only in the diet of patients. The production of such certificate to the abattoir or freezing . works manager will be sufficient authority for the release of the necessary carcases, to such butcher. A similar provision is made in respect of supplies to Public Works defence construction camps, with a restriction of the amount to the equivalent of lilb. per man per month. Surplus stocks of pork carcases not /required for the services may be of- - fered to the Marketing Department.
