WIN FOR PAEROA

INTERESTING RUGBY GAME TE AROHA ARMY BEATEN MATCHES PLAYED ON DOMAIN 7 Interesting football was seen at the Paeroa Domain on Saturday afternoon when the Paeroa senior Rugby representatives defeated a Te Aroha Army team by 13 points to 3. In the first half of the game Paeroa set the pace and put on most of their points, the backs showing flashes of good combination while the forwards worked well together. In the second spell fitness started to tell and Army were able to call the tune, but the Paeroa defence was sufficiently strong to stop the visitors finishing off their movements. The teams were as under:—

Te Aroha Army (red and ‘black.— Monkley, Murray, Ferguson, Telfer, Hoffman, Lynch, Perry, Ainsley, Nicholls, Cornes, Gillon, Gerraty, Langdon, Neil, Baker. Paeroa (green): C. Speechley, J. Jamieson, W. Shilton, G. Fulton, R. Baker, K. Ryall, A. Crosby, J. Murphy, R. Pearson, G. Smith, C. Ricketts, R. Neil, W. Strong, D. Hastie, W. Niven.

Paeroa kicked off with the sun and wind behind them. Army, with a good back movement, penetrated well into Paeroa’s twenty-five but Ryall secured and with a good linekick returned play into Army’s territory. Paeroa continued to press Army and'for a time kept the visitors well on the defence but although Paeroa launched attack after attack Army tackling prevented much penetration.

The Paeroa backs got away, Baker making an opening sending on to Shilton as he was grassed who sent

it out to Ryall who was clear and scored under the posts. Ryall had no difficulty in gaining the major points. Paeroa 5, Army 0.

When Baker was caught off-side during an Army kick Monkley was given a chance in front of the posts from near the twenty-five yard mark but the kick went wide.

Paeroa got away near Army’s twenty-five but Shilton hung on too long and Army stopped the movement. The green forwards continued to force the pace and had Army penned in their own twenty-five. Crosby w r as hurt in a scramble on the Army line but was able to carry on after receiving attention. Good Kick By Shilton

Army launched an attack but Shilton, with a perfect kick, put the ball out on Army’s goal line. From the line-out Ryall sent the ball out to Shilton, who sent it on to Fulton, to score wide out.. Ryall missed the kick.

Paeroa 8, Army 0. Paeroa worked to the Army line but Army forced. From a scrum on the Army line the ball came out to Jamieson, who scored well out.

Ryall’s kick hit the crossbar and bounced over. Paeroa -- - —- —- 13 Army —- —- —.—- --- 0 Half-time was called without further score, Paeroa still attacking. After the interval Army took a turn at attack until Baker secured and ran right through Army, kicked and Shilton following up fast caught Gerraty in possession, Paeroa being granted a free kick in a handy position. Ryall did no good with the kick.

Army quickened the game up and with bustling tactics kept Paeroa worried. Gillon (Army) was injured and had to retire and was replaced by Lowe. Monkley’s Splendid Kick Army were setting the pace at this stage of the game and most of the play was in Paeroa’s twenty-five. Army were awarded a free kick on the side-line on the Paeroa twentyfive and Monkley, with a beautiful kick, secured three points for the visitors.

Paeroa 13, Army 3. Paeroa rushed play into the Army’s twenty-five where the backs got away each handling in turn and Shilton coming round to make the extra man’ but failed to hold a difficult pass right on the Army line. Paeroa continued to press but Army forced and gained relief.

Paeroa rushed play to the Army goal line with bustling tactics but in a scramble on the Army line the visitors were awarded a free kick.

In the ensuing play bad handling allowed Army to work into Paeroa’s territory.

Paeroa’s 'backs got away and Ryall high punted and fast following up by Shilton caught Army in pos-, session, play eventually stopping when the ball went out of play over the corner flag on the Army goalline. With a series of line outs Army worked back into Paeroa’s twentyfive. Paeroa forced when a long kick sent the ball over the goal-line. Army continued to press and the

backs got away but Baker secured and kicked downfield. Time was called without further score. Paeroa — 13 Army -- —.—- 3 Mr S. Keutenius was the referee. JUNIORS WIN TE AROHA BEATEN 14 TO 3 A Paeroa junior rugby team defeated a Te Aroha team by 14 points to three in a match played on the Paeroa Domain on (Saturday. For Paeroa R. Kere, E. Carlton, D. Prout and G. Vuglar all scored while T. Morrison converted a try‘by Carlton. Collins scored the only Te Aroha try. * Mr S. Keutenius was the referee.
