BIG WAITING LIST

HOSPITAL AT THAMES MORE BUILDINGS NEEDED RESIDENT SURGEON’S REPORT Pointing out there was a waiting list containing 54 names of persons awaiting admission for treatment the resident snrgeca of the Thames Hospital, . . - Gifford, in his report to Tuesday’s meeting of the Thames Hospital Board urged that sortie definite plan be adopted to provide an efficient hospital service for the district. The surgeon reported as under: “In spite of the addition of the verandah ward at the men’s end of the hospital, there is still a shortage of accommodation for patients at tne Thames Hospital. 54 Persons Waiting

“This is shown by the state of the waiting list where there are the names of 54 persons awaiting admission for treatment. This is not at all a satisfactory state of affairs. “One of the most acute shortages is in open-air cubicles for the treatment of tuberculosis.

“I report this as I consider that some definite building plan is neces-

sary to provide an efficient hospital service for the district.” Mr W. Madgwick: It’s a statement of fact which we can’t get away from. Prevalent Throughout N.Z.

’ The chairman, Mr iP. E. Brenan, said the same position existed at other hospitals. It was unfortunate, he added, but the board had decided not to embark on a major scheme just at the moment.

Mr C. W. Parfitt said it seemed that the public would have to put up with the position in the meantime until conditions become more normal. It was pointed out that staff also was a trouble.

“Hospital accommodation is no more acute in this district than any other district in New Zealand,” said the chairman.
