If you have run out of starch on washing day boil lib. of rice (or more for large wash) till cooked and use the strained liquid for starching clothes. It is particularly useful for stiffening thin materials where ordinary starch is apt to “cake” on. The rice only requires to be heated through for curry or a pudding. If the family like spaghetti and tomato sauce for lunch or supper on cold days, cook spaghetti yourself in the usual way (in plenty of salted boiling water) and add hot tomato sauce to the drained spaghetti. Much cheaper (and nicer) than getting it out of a tin.
To keep the feet warm and save stockings, cut off the worn feet of silk stockings two or three inches above the heel, turn up half an inch, press, and herringbone round very neatly, then join them to woollen ankle-socks, hemming the stockinglegs inside about midway of the ribbing.
