The George Cross—For “Heroism and Devotion”—arrives in Malta: On Sunday, September 13, 1942, Lord Gort, acting on behalf of King George VI., presented the George Cross to Malta’s citizens. The crosswas accompanied by a letter in the King’s onw hand, reading “Tohonour her brave people. I award the George Cross to the island fortress of Malta to bear witnes sto a heroism, and devotion that will long be famous in history.”
