FISHED WITH HANDS

NEGRO SURVIVOR ' SAVED LIVES OF OTHERS Eight American merchant seamen owe their lives to the bravery and ingenuity of a negro comrade who was adrift with them on a raft in the Indian Ocean for 36 days. The men were members of the crew of an American freighter which fell victim to a Japanese submarine during one of the enemy’s incursions into the Indian Ocean. After drifting about for some days they found that their food supplies were perilously low. They were able to collect enough rainwater to last them for several days hut the meagre store of food was soon exhausted and they faced starvation. Then the negro eome to their assistance. Although the sea was infested with sharks and one had remained uncomfortably near them for a long time he dived into the water and reappeared with a 21b fish in his hands. This unique type of fishing was repeated at intervals until the nine survivors were picked up by a British vessel.
