THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. “Public Service.” FRIDAY, JUNE 11, 1943 A PEOPLE’S LOAN

The £35,000,000 loan subscription list now open is essentially a people’s investment. The money is to be spent in safeguarding their interests, their security, their homes, and their future. It is thus a personal matter which concerns every individual citizen. Moreover, it is a sound investment. Every ] shilling, every pound, so invested will be a form of saving, returning interest. Financial institutions and business houses handling large sums have subscribed generously to previous war loans as these have been placed on the market, and will not be found lacking in response to the present appeal. But no loan of such magnitude, has ever yet 'been sought within the country, and this very fact renders it essential that support for it should be spread as widely as possible. It is a call to every district, town, village, home and citzen throughout New Zealand. It is a much better thing, and much safer for all concerned, to cut down expenditure on articles that can be done without, and lend the saving to the country s cause. There is more money in the country at the present time than there are goods to be bought at their real value. People ’therefore would be wiser to be saving and investing their money than to be paying fancy prices for non-essential commodites. That is one way of checking inflation. Another point well worth considering is that there may. be—we cannot tell —a period of stringency after the war is over until the general disorganisation of the world’s economy caused by the magnitude of the struggle has been straightened out. Savings put into the war loan now would be of very welcome assistance when repaid, in tiding over a difficult period. In any case they will come in handy or serve as a useful nestegg. It is not as if this loan were being raised overseas, to be repaid overseas. It is money being lent in New Zealand, by New Zealand. people, to themselves, and repayable to themselves. Thus it is the most satisfactory and cheapest way of raising money for a national cause, as it means a substantial saving in charges incidental to overseas borrowing. These are material considerations. But there are also moral considerations. There should be no need to dilate upon the larger ethical issues of the struggle. These have been wellemphasised frequently and as being vitally dependent upon the outcome of the war. In the case of this £35,000,000 loan, however, the moral issue at stake is the mental attitude of each indivdual citizen towards a personal obligation to make some sacrifice for the good of his fellbw citizens, his country, and humanity at large. If he has no surplus handy, there are ways and means, which have been explained, by which he may sign up his contribution now, and discharge his indebtedness later. The main thing, the urgent task, is to get in the whole of the £35,000,000 during the next few weeks. It can only be done by fine-combing the country for every shilling . the people are able to lend. It is to be hoped that the kind of response recorded will demonstrate that they have not onlybeen willing, but really anxious, to each do their fair share—that there will be no shirkers or defaulters. *
