INJURED BY BULLET
ACCIDENT AT HIKUTAIA
MAN SERIOUSLY WOUNDED
DROPPED RIFLE DISCHARGED
When a pea rifle which he was carrying discharged accidentally, a Hikutaia youth, Arthur Brocket, aged 19 years, a son of Mr and Mrs J. W. Brocket, of Paeroa, received serious injuries, the bullet entering his groin and
penetrating into his stomach. „ The accident occurred early on Sunday afternoon when the young man was out with his uncle, Mr G. Gibb, on his uncle’s property at Hikutaia. When the two men entered an engine shed on the farm, Mr Gibb left his shot gun outside, but MiBrocket took his rifle inside.
According to reports, Mr Brocket put the rifle down in the shed to help his uncle, but it slipped into the engine well and discharged a bullet as it hit the bottom. It is thought the safety catch was on when the rifle was put down. The bullet entered Mr Brocket’s groin and penetrated into his stomach.
Mr Brocket was taken to the Thames Hospital in a serious condition. Reports this morning state that his condition is still very serious.
