WIN FOR M. VUGLAR

HARRIER CHAMPIONSHIPS

ROAD RACES IN PAEROA

CURRIE & MORRISON RUN WELL

Under ideal weather conditions the Paeroa Harrier Club conducted its road championships on Saturday when a good muster of harriers took part.

A very interesting race was witnessed in the Colts’ Championship between A. Currie, G. Vlahovich and A. Vesper. From the word go Currie went to the front followed by P. Morrison, Vosper and M. Follas witn Vlahovich, B. White and R. Leach bringing up the rear. With half the distance covered there was very little change in the places except that Leaeh, White and Vlahovich had made a move towards the leaders. With 400 yards to go Vlahovich made a dash to the front and put a break on the rest of the field, with Currie and Vosper following in close order, next came Leach, Follas and Morrison. In the run home Currie hung on best to just get there from Vlahovich with Vosper right up third closely followed by Morrison and White.

Mention must be made of the form of three newcomers to the club, P. Morrison, M. Follas and R. Leach. Although not favoured with success these three harriers ran exceptionally well. The sealed handicap resulted in a win for B. White with P. Morrison second and M. Follas third. Junior Championship In the Junior Championship misfortune overtook the favourite for the title, G. Vuglar, who sustained a leg injury which prevented him l from giving of his best and he eventually finished fourth. From the start J. Fowlers went into the lead followed by G. Vuglar, M. Wallan, B. Millar and T. Morrison.

There was very little change in their positions as the runners reached the top of Bennett street and Fowler and Morrison began to draw out clear of* the next man, M. Wallan, who was making a determined effort to keep

with the leaders. It was apparent at this stage that G. Vuglar was suffering from his leg injury and he began to drop back. With one mile to go Fowler and) Morrison were 30 seconds ahead of the third runner, M. Wallan, yvh° was running exceptionally well at this stage, with Vuglar and Millar in the rear. It was a great tussle up the straight between Fowler and Morrison. First one and then the other took the lead and it was not until the last 20 yards that Morrison, putting all he had into it, dashed to the front to lead Fowler over the line a winner by five yards with Wallan running on to take third honours. M. Wallan’s Good Effort The sealed handicap was won by M. Wallan who deserved his win as he ran his best race this season. A surprise was the second placing of R. Millar, who ran very well as this was only his second run of the season. In the Senior Championship, ,M. Vuglar made no race of it and won as he liked in exceptionally fast time. < Results:— n| Colts’ Championship.—A. Currie, 11m. 355., 1; G. Vlahovich, 11m. 365., 2; A. Vosper, 11m. 385., 3.
