NAMES OF EARLY DAYS HOTELS ON PENINSULA BREWERY IN COROMANDEL The following report taken from a clipping from the “Coromandel Mail” of April 18, 1872—71 years ago—will be of interest to many of the older residents of the Peninsula. The clipping reads as under: — The annual licensing meeting was held on the 16th instant before the following bench of magistrates: Capt. Fraser, R.M., Rev. Thomas Scott, J.P., and J. Reeves, Esq., J.P. The following licenses were renewed: Diggers’ Rest, O’Toole; Ballarat Hotel, ,T. Doyle; Waiau Hotel, W. Thorley; Royal Mail, Uriah Glover; Albion Hotel, Robert Jones; Victoria Hotel, Lacon; Pacific Hotel, T. Sheehan; Hibernian Hotel, P. Cummins. The Diggers’ Rest and the Ballarat Hotel were at Driving Creek; the Waiau Hotel at the Tiki; the Royal on the site where Mr Burgess resides; the Pacific stood on piles on the mudflat, opposite Denize Bros.’ stables on the Wharf road; the Victoria was* erected on piles alongside the Coromandel wharf; the Hibern-

ian and the Albion were near together in the lower township, the first on the allotment, now vacant, besides James’ Buildings, and the Albion on the site now occupied by Mr Geo. Purser’s residence.

New licenses were granted to John ■Boyd (for the Coromandel Hotel) and to R. Luke, J. Raisen and J. Halligan (these three houses were on the Tokatea Saddle).

The applications of John Bremner, P. Brodie, Edward Wilson, J. C. Samuels and Michael Kirby were postponed until 21st May, as their premises were not completed. With the twelve pubs doing a flourishing business and fiVe new ones about to open their doors, a brewery seemed to be called for. Messrs Ballin Bros.’ brewery, mentioned in our last issue, was erected on the Tiki road, opposite the Anglican Church. Their beer was pronounced good and the grains were in great demand' for feeding to pigs upon whom it produced marked results when used too freely.
