New Haulage Rope

A new main haulage steel rope, to serve both the James and Strongman State Coal Mines, is being installed. It comprises eight reels, each of BbOO feet. Five of them, "totalling 16,500 feet, were put in last week, and the remainder will be spliced in at a later date. The old rope had reached praatically the end of its life for this purpose and breaks in it had caused stoppages recently, while there was also a likelihood of its becoming dangerous to the men working on it. The hew rope, weighing 37i tons, is valued at about £-5600.
