GOOD WORK DONE
PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL CHAIRMAN RE-ELECTED TRIBUTES PAID MR D. JOHNSON At the annual meeting of the Piako County Council held on Monday, tributes were paid to the retiring’ chairman, Mr D. Johnson, which culminated with his re-election, to that office. Mr Johnson took office a year ago on the retirement of Ci. W. C. Kennedy. Upon the county clerk, Mr F. I. Clarke, taking the chair to call for nominations, Cr. W. A. Rushton nominated Cr. Johnson and in doing so paid tributes to his untiring work during the year. Efficient Officer “Furthermore,” said Cr. Rushton amid smiles, “one year is not sufficient for a chap to get a full knowledge of the council’s workings and another year’s schooling would all help., Cr. Johnson has been a most efficient officer nevertheless.” Tlje motion was seconded by Cr. D. J. Burgess, who added his tributes to those which had previously been made by Crs. Rushton and W. C. Kennedy. Cr. Johnson responded on returning to the chair. County’s Business In the course of his annual report, Cr. Johnson .said that although the normal business of the county had been somewhat overshadowed by the war, progress had been made within the limits of the situation. Quite a lot of work had had to be curtailed and a large number of . employees had gone to the war. Within the limits imposed, however, loyal service had been given and the chairman felt he should record his appreciation of the staff’s services. To his fellow councillors he also paid tribute, for though many matters had been keenly debated at the council table, members had taken no grievances away with them. The county’s finances were in good shape and plans were in mind for work which could be done as soon as circumstances permitted. It was feared that roads were perhaps not up to the standard they had been several years ago, but this was the inevitable result of the war.
As in previous years the whole council was elected as the Finance Committee, and the chairman’s honorarium was fixed at £lOO.
