ARREARS OF RATES
COLLECTION ON PLAINS ONLY £2207 OUTSTANDING £271/18/1 PAID DURING APRIL A final drive, before issuing summonses, in an effort to collect arrears of rates, was reported to Wednesday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council by the clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney, who stated that £271 18s Id arrears had been collected during the period ended May 20, 1943. The clerk reported as under: “I made a final drive for arrears of rates before issuing summonses as instructed, with the result that £2/1 18s Id has been collected, leaving the total, arrears including Natives, at £2207 14s Id. Native arrears amount to £691 3s 3d and European to £1516 10s 10d. “I asked by letter that any defaul - ino- ratepayer in difficulties should call here and explain his position, and one ratepayer brought his dairy company statements for the past ten months. This case comes within the provisions of Section 74 of the Rating Act, 1925, as jt is the most deplorable case of poverty I have encountered m my local body experience. He owes 1942-43 rates only, amounting to £22 10s Bd, including penalty, and I recommend that this be remitted. This ratepayer applied for relief to the Adjustment Commission, but a dined to accept any remissions and has met all rates previous to 1942-43 and I am sure will meet all futuie
rates.” The rates, totalling £23 10s Bd, were written off.
