IN THE RAIN

PAEROA HARRIERS OUT VUGLAR WINS BY INCHES 51 MILE RACE OVER THE ROADS On Saturday members of the Paeroa Harrier Club displayed the real harrier spirit in. braving the adverse weather conditions and assembling at the Paeroa Domain grandstand, for the first weekly points meeting of the season. The members were divided into two packs, a racing pack and a slow pack.

The slow pack, which was led by that versatile harrier, M. Wallan, maintained a fast pace throughout the four-mile journey. A newcomer to the club, P. Pennell, showed that he has an abundance of stamina a#d should improve as the season progresses. B. White ran a good race and more will be heard of him in the club championsfiips. A. Vosper and G. Vlahovich are harriers above the, average and were to the fore throughout the hard four-mile course. A run-in was held over the final 880 yards and the results are as follows: M. Wallan, scr., 1; P. Pennell, scr., 2; A. Vosper, 100yds, 3.

The racing pack held a race over a gruelling road course of 51 miles in preparation for the club championship on June 5. From the start M. Vuglar went to the front and was never afterwards headed, although he was hard pressed by J. 'Fowler to get the decision. The runners went away to a good start, M. Vuglar dashing to the front and setting a very stiff pace. Next came F. Sharp, followed by J. Fowler. With half the journey covered there was little alteration in the positions except that J. Fowler began a forward move. A mile from home M. Vuglar was striding along nicely in front but was being strongly challenged by Sharp and Fowler. Nearing the. finish the latter pair, with some effort, drew level with Vuglar and a battle royal took place in the . run to the judge. Finishing brilliantly, M. Vuglar went on to gain the judge’s decision by inches from J. Fowler with F. Sharp in third position.

After the run afternoon tea was provided which was greatly appreciated by the members.. Next week the club will conduct the final run before the road championship on June 5. All interested ■ are invited to attend at the Paeroa Domain grandstand at 3 p.m.
