FORTY YEARS AGO
FAREWELLED BY CHURCH CARRIAGE FACTORY BUSY ATTRACTIVE BUGGY COMPLETE (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of May 19, 1903) A very pleasing ceremony took place at St. Paul’s Church on Friday evening when Miss L. Griffiths, who is leaving the district fo rthe South, was presented by- the members of the choir with a . very handsome prayer book. The presentation was made by ( Mr Harston, the conductor, in the absence of the vicar, the Rev. Mr Cowie. In making the tion Mr/ Harston referred to the great attention Miss Griffiths had paid to the choir during the many years she had been connected with the church, and regretted exceedingly the choir was losing one of its oldest members.
On Wednesday last a representative of this paper paid a visit to the Goldfields Carriage Factory, in connection with which the proprietor, Mr Joseph Brenan, is so well and favourably known. Mr Brenan and his staff were, as usual, busy turning- out orders of every description. Our representative saw many vehicles of different designs in course of construction, but there was one fresh from the paint shop that struck him to be the 'best piece of workmanship he had seen for some time. It is a single-seated concord buggy, and is built to the order of Mrs Wight. It is most artistically painted, although not quite finished, with green, lined 1 with gold, black and fawn colour. The cushions and the back of the seats are trimmed with maroon coloured leather of the latest design. The whole turn-out* is a credit to Mr Brenan and also to the painter, Mr A. Rawlings.
