COMPLAINT TO BOARD

QUESTION OF DRAINAGE DRAINS NOT ALL. CLEANED A request that the board clean; its drains in the vicinity of his property was made by Mr D. Troughton, at Thursday’s meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board. Mr Troughton wrote to the board as under: — “I would be obliged if the board would come to an agreement in regard 1 to Troughton-Henry drain and the Hauraki road drain on my frontage. The/agreement “that Trough-ton-Henry drain be maintained for flood water and the Hauraki road drain on Troughton’s frontage to be j deepened and maintained for the deep drainage,” was arrived at when Messrs. Herkt and Pearce were on the board. “When the road drainage scheme was formed the road drain was to be a catchment area for the numerous drains emptying.into it. I would like it to be noted that the road drain is too small for flood waters —the weeds close the bottom in a short time. “When the scheme was formed there were no objections from the ratepayers therefore I fail to see why the board should abandon this catchment drain. I would be obliged if the board would notify me as to their intention.”

The opinion was expressed by members that Mr Troughton had better drainage than the average. The board had the right to change its drainage system from time to time——a change was usually to give the best drainage possible to the greatest area. It was pointed out that it was not the board’s duty to drain a farm but to provide an outlet so that a ratepayer could drain his farm into the board’s drains.

It was decided to recondition the Troughion-Henry drain to bring it back to its former depth but could not agree to do any more to the roadside drain than maintain it from the Mangohui drain to Mr Troughtons central drain.
