FARMER’S PROTEST
TIDE AFFECTING HIS LAND BIG LOSS OF PRODUCTION CLOVER & PASPALUM RUINED Loss of production and the destruction of clover and paspalum valued at hundreds of ‘pounds caused by tidal water flooding his property due to the unsatisfactory state of the stopbank protecting his property combined with the state of the Clay road 'drain was the subject of a complaint to Thursday’s meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board by Messrs Beus Bros., of Turua. In a letter to the board Messrs Beus Bros, pointed out that some time ago they had asked the board to raise the stopbank which ran parallel with their property. “This stopbank has had water over on many occasions while the bank also leaks very badly even when the tide does not top it,” stated the letter.
•“The introduction of tall fescue and canary grass to our property per medium of tidal water is both a. worry and a problem. We ourselves feel hurt by the board’s action. Not only have we been let down by the board failing to raise the stopbank but now the board has stopped clearing some 26 chains of drain which was a great help in distributing the tide waters,” continued the letter.
They asked the board to inspect •both the bank and the drain with a view to giving them some relief. The above matter was left to the area member to investigate.
