PRICE ALLOWED FOR BACON PIG

(To the Editor.)

-Sir, —At the Netherton meeting of pig producers there was a discussion on the price paid for pig meat in Australia. I was unable to give a authenttative statement -of the price paid at the time but I am now able to do so. I listened-in to a broadcast from Australia on Sunday morning and heard a speaker explain what he called “The new pig plan for the whole of Australia.” -He said that the price to be paid for bacon pigs l of 1001 b. to 1601 b. weight was 8d per lb. for first grade and Bd less for second grade at works for a period of two years. He also stated that they did not intend to regulate the price of porkers at present, adding that the price paid to-day was about 10d per lb. In asking the Australian pig ’producers to increase -bacon production he stressed the point that in the North Island of New Zealand the price paid for bacon pigs was only- 63d per lb. plus id per lb. for four winter months. He said surely if New Zealand farmers could produce bacon at that price it was up to the “Aussies-” to do their bit at 8d per lb. He also stressed the point that barley' could be bought for 2s 8d per bushel.

Now Sir, if the ■ pig producer is getting 8d per lb. for bacon pigs surely the New Zealand producer is entitled to a like amount when one takes into consideration the fact that the price of pig food in New Zealand is about twice the price ( charged in Australia. —I am, etc., W. H. CHEALE. Netherton, 17:4:43.
