THAMES COUNCIL MEETS APPLICATIONS FOR LAND GIRLS The May meeting of the Thames District Council of Primary Production was held in the Borough Chambers, Thames', recently, those present being:—Messrs S. E. Hall (chairman), C. W. Schultz, H. S. Curtis, W. Hamilton, W. A. Jefferis, W. H. Cheale, E. W. Harris, and D. Courtney, members, Mr Allo, representing Department of Agriculture, Thames, Mr R. W. Chappell, representing 4 National Service Department, Paeroa and J. E. Green, secretary. Apology for unavoidable absence was received from Mr J. Thorn, M.P. t It was resolved to approve and confirm the information and reports given by council members and the members of their committees on enquiries received from the National Service. Department and the Armed Forces Appeal Board on a number of cases and also that of applications for and appointment of a number of land girls under the Women’s Land Service scheme. Five applications for the support of the council for appeals were received and dealt with and the support of the council given in each case. Women For Vegetable Growing It was resolved that the letter received from the National Service Department giving details of vacancies for women workers under the Department of Agriculture vegetable growing scheme to be trained as supervisors at Ruakura be forwarded to the secretary of the W.W.S.A. for their information and for the recommendation of any women available and suitable for this work. Mr C. W. Schultz reported that he had been informed by Mr T. McLean of Ngatea that he had available about 2Q acres of good cob maize, also about 250 tons of cut ti tree firewood which he would like to dispose of to the best advantage and would welcome any suggestions the council could make as to its disposal.
