TYRES WANTED
FIRE BRIGADE FOREMAN SUPPORT OF THE BOROUGH KEY MAN IN PAEROA BRIGADE z At Thursday night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council, support was given to the application of the fore-man-secretary Of the Paeroa Volunteer Fire Brigade, Mr C. W. Malcolm, of Netherton, for tyres for his car to enable him to attend any fires which occurred in the borough.. In stating the need for such tyres the secretary of the brigade wrote to the council as 1 follows:—
“At Tuesday night’s meeting of my brigade I was directed by unanimous resolution to place before youi* council in writing my position in view of my inability to procure tyres for my car.
“At the above meeting I reported to my brigade with regret that in view of the declining of my application for tyres I should be compelled to relinquish my position as foreman, carrying on only in a very limited capacity as secretary. I pointed out to the brigade, as I did in my application to the Tyre and Tube Controller, Thames, that, since the war began, almost completely the whole of my car running had been done in the fire service. Twice the brigade has declined to relieve me of my position as t foreman and of the duties of drilling and training the brigade and the auxiliary. On the more recent occasion members of the fire council impressed upon me the duty of carrying on my responsibilities.
“Until March 19, the telephone . alarm of fire, often before the firebell had been rung*, and the speed at which I travelled into Paeroa, served to get me to fires on almost'every occasion before the last local fireman got there. On that date, however, when travelling to the fire at Mr Percy Williams’ property, I had the misfortune to sustain a blow-out in a front tyre, the .tube being completely destroyed. The condition of at least .two of my remaining tyres is serious. I use them at considerable risk and their life is. very limited. “The Tyre and Tube Controller declined my • application with regret but stated that a further application for second-hand tyres would be considered. I have failed to find any second-hand tyres. They would certainly be acceptable though of doubtful value for proceeding to fires.” The opinion was expressed that Mr Malcolm was a keen and enthusiastic fireman—a key man in the brigade—and the council should endeavour to secure tyres for him if possible. The acting-town clerk, Mr A. A. Jenkinson, was instructed to write to the, tyre controller supporting Mr Malcolm’s application for tyres.
