JUMPING BLOOD

BREEDING OF

REAL DAIRYFARM HORSE

MR GERALD HILL’S HURDLER

Ginno, recent winner over hurdles at Mataniata and Paeroa, was bred by his owner, Mr 'Gerald Hill, of 'Paeroa, and, although not in the Stud Book, he can boast some great jumping blood, and has a most interesting family history, states the New Zealand Farmers’ Weekly in a recent issue. He is a real dairy farm horse, having been bred, broken in, hacked, worked and schooled on the farm, and he was four years old before he left it to take on A serious preparation for racing. Last season Ginno had a few races on the flat without showing much promise. His young owner persevered with him and put him to jumping, a game for which he showed an iminediate aptitude. He raced rather unluckily in the Waiwera Hurdle Race at Ellerslie in January, and at his next start he won the Pohutu Hurdles at the Rotorua meeting with the greatest of ease, paying a double figure win dividend. •

He was sent out favourite for his next race, the Paeroa Handicap Hurdles which he duly won, and he ran a solid third 'behind Stock 'Exchange and Kaspian in the Bay of Plenty Hurdles. He is a bold and fearless fencer and a game finisher and with the winter coming on he should more than pay his way. ’ Medora an Early Champion ■Ginno is a five-year-old chestnut by Autopay from Dainty Manners by Jack ‘Abbey from Silver Bonus by Sylvite from Bonus by Tim, Whiffler from Kahikatea by Puriri from Medora, which is as far as the pedigree can be traced. This family was. in the possession of the late Mi’ Frank McGovern, father of Mr A. J. McGovern, for about thirty years, and he won a great many races with them. Medora was a great winner in Taranaki in the early days and the acknowledged champion among the local performers and her daughter Kakikatea, by Puriri, won a lot of races for Mr McGovern and he bred the useful performers Stranger, Strayshot, Whiffler, Bonus and Bawn Boy from her. Bonus won five races at registered meetings, including the Stratford Handicap Hurdles. Dainty Manners raced for four seasons, and ran two seconds and two thirds. Her sire, Jack Abbey, was bred at Hikutaia by Mr W. K. Morrison and never raced. His pedigree, as supplied to the writer, is by Quin Abbey from Waiutu by 'Carl Rosa from"Waiotahi by Blue Jacket from Lady Emily by Castor from Lady Wellington (24) by Musket. If this pedigree is -correct, Jack Abbey, though not in the Stud Book, is eligible for admission. Lady Emily had a filly by Blue Jacket in 1904, but it was never named and no foaling returns were ever made and that is nearly 40 years ago. Carl Rosa was a half-brother to the Auckland Cup winner Santa Rosa, and to Roxana, dam of the Auckland Cup winner Waimangu and Blue Jacket ■yjrpn the Auckland Cup twice, a good background of stamina. There are two Great Northern Hurdles winners m Jack Abbey s family. Lady Wellington was a halfsister to Queen Cole, dam of Battle Axe and Lady Emily was a half-sis-ter to Lady Apollo, third dam of Wee Pat. Sylvite Bred in Australia •Sylvite was bred in Australia in 1908 and was by Sylvanite from Twilight by the A.J.C. St. Leger winner Cobbity (son of Abercorn) from Slumber by Trenton from Nightmare by Panic from Evening Star (9), by Lord Clifden. He was at Mr Harry Weal’s stud in the Waikato, but was not a success. Sylvanite, who won both the A.J.C. and V.R.C. Derbies, was by Grafton from Gold Dust by Niagara (half-brother to Trenton and Cuirassier) from Goldlike by Trenton from Aureola (13), sister to Onyx, dam of Nordenfeldt.
