RUGBY IN PAEROA
ANNUAL MEETING HELD
SPORT FOR COMING SEASON
OFFICERS FOR YEAR ELECTED The annual meeting of the Paeroa Rugby Union was held in the Civic Hall on Wednesday evening, the president, Mr Edwin Edwards, presiding over a small attendance of players and supporters. The chairman of the committee, Mr D. G. McMillan, reviewed the year, pointing out that there had been little activity due to most of the players being absent serving in the Armed Forces. The clubs had not been able to function but some games had been played.
A match was played with Waihi for the Johnson Cup, which Paeroa won, and later lost to Thames. A match was also played with a Hamilton team, Paeroa being beaten.
The year had been a very difficult one and the best possible had been done to carry on in the circumstances. The balance-sheet disclosed that there was a credit balance of £ll 10s 4d in the general account and a balance of £45 4s 3d in the insurance account.
The president referred to the deaths of several former players of the union while serving in the Armed Forces, mentioning W. W. Brocklebank, R. Lamb, G. Mitchell and W. Fulton, the meeting standing in silence as a mark of respect.
The possibility of organising home and home matches with Te Aroha, Waihi and Thames was mentioned by Mr McMillan in advising the meeting that forty players had signified their intention of turning out this ' year. Receipts from the gates at these matches would be used to pay the travelling expenses of the teams. The election of officers resulted as under: —Patron, Mr J.
