COROMANDEL COUNTY COUNCIL
(To The Editor)
Sir, —As one of many who did not sign the petition requesting the appointment to the Coromandel County Council of the “well-known citizen” referred to by your correspondent, “Ratepayer,” I should like to' point out that the well-advised citizen (and councillor) does well to avoid political chicanery calculated to influence the declared policy of elected members, and accordingly to avoid a petition .which arises, not from a heartfelt need of the community, but from the efforts of an influential minority.
The gentleman whose nomination was requested in the petition is literally “well-seasoned,” and doubtless capable of much, but why attribute .to him powers as a councillor which are the common, right of the man in the street. His nomination will render the meetings of our council no more public than at present. If “Ratepayer” is genuinely concerned about “alleged this and that,” let him attend the county meetings and form his own opinion. I hope he sees there a councillor of the calibre of Mr T. V. Whittle. —I am, etc., VENI, VIDI. Coromandel, May 10.
