NEW DISEASE
TREES IN BOTANIC GARDEN PROBLEM IN CHRISTCHURCH An apparently new disease is affecting English beech trees in the Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park, according to a report to the Christchurch Domains Board by the director (Mr J. A. McPherson).
“For some time observations have ■been kept on several beech trees in Riccarton avenue and the beech tree planted on the archery lawn,” said Mr MctPherson. “ The disease appears to live and work in the cambium layer just beneath the bark and quietly but steadily entirely kills out the bark.” Dr. Cunningham, Director of the Plant Diseases Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Auckland, had visited the gardens on two occasions recently to discuss the problem, and portions of the affected trees had been forwarded to the division for the preparation of isolations in order to obtain cultures.
