DRAINS POLLUTED
PIGS & COWSHED WASHINGS TROUBLE AT HIKUTAIA STAND TAKEN BY COUNTY Dead pigs thrown into the drains, cowfhed washing polluting them in cowshed washings polluting them m some of the reasons given by the engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw to Wednesday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council why drain cleaners have been unable to complete all the drains in the Hikutaia* area.
The engineer reported as under: —
“In the Hikutaia end of the area most of the drains have been cleaned and the remainder are under way. Some difficulty has been experienced in getting certain property owners, to clear the blackberries from the drains and in some cases the work is not proceeding on this account, and in other cases where cowyard manure is washed into the drain the contractors are asking for increased prices for cleaning these sections, so instructions have been given to leave these until the offenders have done the cleaning. “Also a length of two chains of Alexander’s Canal has been left until the person responsible for throwing dead pigs in at this point has removed them.
“This stand is necessary as the practice is becoming very prevalent.” After some discussion the chairman, Mr W. Marshall, moved that the engineer be supported in any action he took in regard to the offences mentioned in the report—for they were offences. The motion was carried and the report was adopted.
