HOME GUARD RIFLE RANGE DECISION OF THE COUNCIL At the April meeting of the Coromandel County Council a letter was received from the Hauraki Battalion •Home Guard Headquarters asking that the road into the rifle range at Preece’s Point be improved. The letter stated that an inspection had been made of the work done on the rifle range at Preece’s Point. The range it was stated, was a good one and the work carried out by the local Home Guard Unit had rendered it ready for us. The road leading to the range was not negotiable except on foot and the council was asked to contribute the services of the grader for one day. A discussion ensued and disparaging remarks were made by Cr. A. J. ■Denize on the various jobs that have been carried out in this district under instructions from the military. He further made slighting remarks, about the Home Guard training whereupon the clerk, Mr J. H. Lucas, who is captain of the local unit, said he was of the opinion that Cr. Denize s remarks called for an apology.
Cr. Denize: It’s true and I dont care if it is published. He later apologised to Mr Lucas. It was then proposed by Cr. E. M. Minifie and seconded by Cr. Jackson “that the request of -the Armed Forces in respect of the use of grader pe acceeded. to.”—Carried. Mr Lucas spoke highly of the work carried out by the local platoon who had formed themselves into a working bee and had done -'a good job of work on the rifle range, which, when the .targets were made was ready for use.
