SUCCESSFUL CARNIVAL STAGED

LARGE CROWD ATTEND

KEREPEEHIRACES HELD

meeting on paeroa course

Although the weather in the early part of the day was anything but promising, a large crowd attended the Kerepeehi Racing and Sports Club’s annual carnival held at the Paeroa Racecourse on Easter Monday, the gate takings being in the vicinity of £lOO. Spectators were present from all parts of the Hauraki Plains and the Waikato district as well as from the neighbouring centres of Paeroa, Waihi and Te Aroha. Entries were among the best the club has ever had, were of a good class and some very fine contests were witnessed especially in the trotting events.

With four galloping races, a hurdle race and three trotting events, an excellent bill of fare was presented and that the fixture retains its full popularity, in spite of war conditions, was more than proved by the number of horses and of the general public present at the function. A number of side shows were in attendance and these were very well patronised by the young folk. ■ The Officials « All the officials Worked with a will to ensure the success of the meeting and although the programme was a large one, under the watchful eye of the energetic president, Mr C. F. Pearce, all events were run off without a hitch. The officials were as follows: —

Hunting judge.—Mr D. W. Thomas. Galloping and trotting judge.—Mr D. G. McMillan.

.Starters.—Messrs W. Crimmins (galloping), and J. Thrupp (trotting). Call steward.—Mr H. W. Candy. Clerk of course.—Mr T. Jordan.

Interesting Race Although scratchings were heavy in the galloping events some keen racing was seen and in the Kerepeehi Cup, the big race of the day, six horses faced the starter, Mr F. Handley’s Gold Vaals ridden by Mr G. .Spinks, winning very easily.

The Kerepeehi Trotting Cup, in which there were 10' starters, was perhaps the most interesting race of the day, the back marker, Mr H. Radford’s Eighteen Carat ridden by Mr G. Spinks, winning very comfortably. In the main jumping event Mr F. C. Reeves’ Red Matai was-too good for the other horses.

In presenting the cups the president referred to the high standard of the performances of the successful horses, congratulating the owners on their respective wins. The success in the Kerepeehi Cup of the local horse, Gold Vaals, had been a popular one, said Mr Pearce in handing the cup to Mr F. Handley. In reply, Mi* Handley said he was pleased indeed to be a winner at the Kerepeehi Racing and Sports Club s meeting which he always enjoyed. To Mr Reeves the owner of the winner of the Open Hunter, Mr Pearce extended his congratulations, expressing the hope that he would be able to return to compete in the event next year. Mr Pearce also congratulated Mr Radford on his success in lifting the Kerepeehi Trotting Cup. Jockey Club Thanked In conclusion Mr Pearce expressed the club’s thanks to the Ohinemuri Jockey Club for their kindncc. i making the course available; fc*' meeting and to all who had so w..iingly made donations to the club to ensure the success of the function.
