NGATEA FAREWELL

PRESENTATION MADE GNR. J. PENMAN HONOURED FUNCTION LAST WEDNESDAY Opportunity was taken on Wednesday evening last, at the Ngatea 'Patriotic Committee’s monthly dance, to make a presentation to Gunner J. Penman, who is at present on leave in the Ngatea district. Sneaking for the local residents and on behalf of the Ngatea Soldiers’ Farewell Committee, Mr E. R. Sher lock said that Gunner Penman who had been living in the district for some time previous to his entering camp, was yet another serviceman from the Hauraki Plains, to do his share in dealing with the present crisis confronting the Empire. He was leaving a wife and family and Mr Sherlock expressed admiration of the way in which men in theses circumstances were facing up to the situation. If this war is to be won, every man, woman and child will be called upon to make many sacrifices. - “While we are very sorry that you must leave your home,” concluded the speaker, “we do fee 1 proud of oui’ fighting men and pray that it will not be too .long before you are returned to your loved ones again. Godspeed and the best of good wishes.” In accepting the usual presentation, Gunner Penman said that he would take his place with the lads who had gone before. He thanked one and all for their kindness and urged the dancers to make the most of the evening’s entertainment, the proceeds of which were to assist the Patriotic funds. Cheers and rousing musical honours followed.

A plenteous sandwich supper was served, and dancing continued until the small hours.
