HIKUTAIA PETITION

STOCK ROUTE OVER RANGES

REQUEST TO THAMES COUNTY

At the March meeting of the Thames County Council, Mr D. Courtney petition was received from settlers and residents of Hikuaia and Tairua, asking that the Hikuaia-Puriri, via Neavesville, track be opened, “as,” the letter stated, “the only route now available for taking stock from this district is through Whangamata, via the Wires to Hikutaia, which is a very long and rough journey and double the distance of the Neavesville route. In case of an emergency, a road by this route would be invaluable for giving quick access to this area for troops and supplies.”

The petition was discussed at length and after consideration the council defererd its decision pending an examination by the council of other suggested routes.
