SHOULD BE DEHORNED
ALL CATTLE IN SALEYARDS DECISION OF LOCAL FARMERS Compulsory dehorning of all cattle before they are taken to the saleyard or trucked on the rail was urged by Waihi at the meeting of the Northern Thames Sub-Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held at Thames on Tuesday. 4
In support of the remit, Mr A. J. Campbell pointed out that many animals were damaged both in the saleyards and in trucks through horning and the loss in fat stock caused this way was 1 considerable. He also emphasised the danger to pedestrians, especially children, when animals with horns were being driven along the roads.
Considerable opposition to compulsory dehorning was voiced, some members pointing out that the value of animals was reduced if the stock were without horns. .
Mr E. M. Minifie (Whenuakite) pointed out that cattle off runs not dehorned brought better prices at the sales. After a considerable discussion the remit was carried.
