EARLY THAMES RESIDENT BOUGHT MINE SHARES LATE MR H. F. CHRISTIE The death at Wanganui of Dr. H. H. Christie has revived among the descendants of old Thames gold miners stories told of. his father, the late Mr H. F. Christie. Mr Christie, as a young Scot just arrived in New Zealand in the late L sixties, found his way to the goldfields. He worked hard with little result, hut kept his eyes open and when the scrip of one of the afterwards famous claims fell to a very low level, he -bought all he could and awaited results. One morning he awoke to discover that the scrip he had bought was worth £20,000. . He immediately sold out and joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand in the early ’seventies. He was manager of the Patea branch for about a quarter of a century, dunn» which time he visited his native land on different occasions. When he retired he longed to en his days in Scotland, -but the climate proved too severe for him, so he came hack and bought a fine property on .St. John’s Hill, Wanganui, where he lived to a ripe old age, driving his own motor car till he was over SO 1 years of age.
