ANOTHER YEAR ENDED

PAEROA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL THE BREAKING-UP CEREMONY. On Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock the activities of school work were suspended for the year, and the scholars assembled in the schoolgrounds to celebrate the conclusion of another year of study. Mr G. H. Taylor, the headmaster, in his opening remarks said that it was customary for the whole school to foregather just before breaking up. He trusted that they would all have a happy holiday and return to their studies fresh and with a determination to do even better than in the present year. Speaking of the progress made, Mr Taylor said that much good work had been done, and he hoped it would continue. He expressed appreciation of the manner in which the staff had worked at all times. Their loyal assistance had been a deciding factor in the progress of the school, and he wished to take this opportunity of thanking them. He urged the scholars to strive to make a success in life, and this could be achieved by straight going. The chairman of the School Committee, Mr C. T. Mettam, gave his hearty congratulations to the successful candidates who had obtained proficiency and other examination passes. He urged all to take full advantage of the free education that was given by the State and to remain at school and get all they possibly could in the way of schooling. He then handed out the proficiency certificates to the scholars whose names appeared in our last issue. To Master Kenneth McKee he also handed a silver cup, as the winner of the school steeplechase, and cups to Master S. Short (high jump), Master E. Maunders (athletic champion of the school), and Miss J. Hobart (tennis handicap ’champion). He hoped they would get their names engraved on the cups, and concluded by wishing one and all a merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Three hearty cheers were then given by the scholars for the headmaster and teachers. TURUA SCHOOL. PRIZE-GIVING. The annual prize-giving at the Turua school was held on Thursday afternoon.
