93RD. BIRTHDAY.
MR. WILLIAM McWATTERS. PIONEERING DAYS AT THAMES. A pioneer of Thames, Mr William John McWatters, on Saturday celebrated his ninety-third birthday. He was born at Glenoe, near Belfast, in 1836, and landed in Auckland in January, 1863. For some years he ran his own cutter in the coast trade, paying visits, to Thames before it was proclaimed a goldfield. Leaving the sea, Mr McWatters turned his attention to mining, his first task being at the Missouri battery, in Tararu Creek. Eventually he became manager. Later he was appointed foreman of the Thames County Council, and supervised the construction of the coast road from Thames to the boundary at Waikawau. Being an expert in mining batteries, he returned to the mining sphere, and was manager at various plants for 20 years. Mr McWatters is hale and hearty and in full possession of his faculties. On Saturday morning the Mayor of Thames, Mr W. Bongard, paid him a visit. He has also received many telegrams of congratulation from all parts of New Zealand. A son of Mr McWatters, Mr D. McWatters, is in business in Paeroa.
